What are Spiral Staircases?
Spiral Staircases are a set of Spiral Stairs that wind in a spiral fashion around a central pole.
A Spiral Staircases is a run of stairs that usually traverse around a central position, sometimes a pole. Usually in most cases the set of Spiral Stairs will only have a handrail on the outer side of the spiral twist. Sometimes the Spiral Staircase will assume a square stairwell; however pure Spiral Staircases will assume a circular design with screw like symmetry as the stairs climb.
One of the reason Spiral Staircases are so popular is that they can be very space efficient when compared to a normal staircase. When a tight spiral is used around a central pole the Spiral Staircase design becomes even more space efficient. Although such designs are massively efficient in term of space some degree of care should be taken when climbing and descending the stairs as the steps become increasingly narrow as the step moves closer to the centre pole. It is for this reason that the Spiral Staircase user should not clime the stairs in a position that is to close to the centre pole and should always use the hand rail.
A brief history of Spiral Stairs and Staircases
Spiral Stairs and their part in world famous historical architecture.
Spiral Stairs have a played a big part in history. Threw out the medieval period Spiral Stairs we common place. Generally the Spiral Stairs of this period were very different to our range of Spiral Stairs, often they were made of stone. It was most common (if the host was right-handed) that the Spiral Stairs would wind in a clockwise direction from the ascenders point of view. Spiral Stairs were build this way to give the house owner an advantage when defending his property from sword wielding attackers. The type of Spiral Stairs and staircases built in this period were generally not built around a central pole unless in a church spire. Famous example of Spiral Stairs around the 16th century include Myres Castle and Crathes Castle.
